Business in Auckland

Growing our local economy

Auckland Council works with our 21 local boards to help plan, fund and achieve the policies of our economic development strategy at a local level.

We work with local boards that have prioritised local economic development, by identifying actions in their local board plans.

This work includes:

  • economic development overviews and action plans
  • research studies
  • advice on local economic development issues
  • small projects to boost economic activity within town centres.

Local economic development overviews

We give each local board an economic development overview that provides information on the trends within the local board area, key sectors and areas of growth, and actions the local board can take to support and grow their local economy.

The 2013 local economic development overviews are now complete for these local boards:

  • Rodney
  • Franklin
  • Whau.

The remaining local economic development overviews will be completed by January 2014

Local economic development action plans

Some local boards are working with key stakeholders to develop an economic development action plan.

The action plan pulls together existing or new economic development programmes and projects and encourages stakeholders to sign up to implement the actions.

Draft action plans are complete for:

  • Franklin
  • Orākei
  • Waitematā
  • Whau.

Upcoming action plans include:

  • Kaipātiki
  • Ōtara-Papatoetoe
  • Papakura
  • Rodney.

Business precinct plans

We work on business precinct plans for major industrial and commercial areas within the region.

We collaborate with a range of stakeholders to create an achievable set of actions that will help to grow business and support skills and innovation across Auckland.

There are business precinct plans for:

  • Rosebank
  • Church Street/Neilson Street (Penrose)
  • East Tamaki.

Local projects

We also manage the delivery of local economic development projects within local board areas, such as studies and research, and skills development projects in partnership with stakeholders, COMET Auckland, ATEED and other parts of the council.

We also partner with Auckland Transport and operational departments to deliver physical projects that help to improve our town centres and areas of business.

Current projects include:

  • Greater East Tamaki signage project
  • North Harbour Business Association signage project
  • North Davies Avenue improvement project
  • Otara – MIT Linkage improvement project.
