Types of alcohol licences

Before you sell or supply alcoholic drinks, you need to make sure you have the correct alcohol licence.

When you're ready, you can apply for an on, off or club licence or renew your alcohol licence.

On-licence

If you want to sell or supply alcohol to be consumed on your premises.

Examples include:

  • restaurant (including BYO)
  • bar, tavern or nightclub
  • theatre or cinema
  • hotel
  • function centre
  • winery cellar door
  • conveyance (i.e. bus, train, plane)

Off-licence

If you want to sell or supply alcohol to be consumed away from the place of purchase:

  • supermarket
  • grocery store
  • bottle store
  • hotel or tavern that sells alcohol to take away
  • remote sales premises (online or mail order)
  • winery cellar door.

Club licence

If you want to sell and supply alcohol at your club for consumption on site by club members and their guests.

Examples include:

  • RSA
  • sports club
  • working men’s club
  • social club.

Special licence

For events or special occasions where alcohol is sold or supplied.

Examples include:

  • wine tastings
  • birthdays
  • private functions
  • festivals
  • concerts
  • sporting events
  • bus trips
  • ticketed events
  • functions in public venue where public access is not restricted.

Apply for a special licence

Temporary authority

If you are the new owner of a premises that already has a current licence, you can apply for a temporary authority.

This allows you to trade for up to three months under the licence's existing terms and conditions.

This gives you times to lodge a new on or off-licence application.

A temporary authority cannot be issued to a club.
