20 February 2017 - Proposal to Revoke the Reserve Status over Omaha Reserve (Closing Date: 28 March 2017)

Pursuant to section 24 (2) (b) of the Reserves Act 1977, Auckland Council hereby notifies its intention to seek the approval of the Department of Conservation to the revocation or uplifting of the reserve status over the two land parcels described in the schedule below and known as Omaha Reserve.

Omaha Reserve is located at the corner of Omaha Drive and North West Anchorage in Omaha and occupied by three recreational activities (bowling, golf and tennis clubs), one local purpose activity (community centre), and two commercial activities (commercial café and golf pro-shop).

All these activities have been supported by both the Council and the Omaha community for many years.   Unfortunately, Omaha Reserve is currently owned by the Council as an unclassified local purpose reserve and subject to the Reserves Act.  Under that Act only local purpose activities are permitted on a local purpose  reserve and so both the existing recreation and commercial activities on Omaha Reserve do not comply with the Act.

Revoking or removing the reserve status from Omaha Reserve is considered by the Council as the most practical solution to resolve the non-compliance issues.  Once revoked the property would still remain owned and administered by the Council under the Local Government Act 2002.

Under the 2002 Act, the Council could grant the required leases or licences to all the existing activities and they would all become compliant under that Act.   The Council would like to reassure everyone that none of the existing activities on Omaha Reserve will be threatened by the revocation proposal and that the end result will enable these activities to continue on undeterred and to benefit the Omaha Community.

A plan showing Omaha Reserve is available for inspection at the Ground Floor of the Pacific /Tasman Building, 50 Centreway Road, Orewa.

Any person wishing to object to the proposed revocation may do so in writing and addressed to the Chief Executive, Auckland Council, Private Bay 92300, Auckland 1142, Attention: Dave Bayley, no later than 5.00 pm on Friday, 28 March 2017.

Alternatively, submissions may be emailed to

Objections should state if the objector wishes to be heard.  Any objector’s information provided to the Council will become subject to the Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act 1977 and may be released by the Council under that Act.   Any objector should state in their objection if the whole or any part of the projection is to be kept confidential.
