Amenities and activities

Parking

The main entrance and carpark is off Caldwells Road.

Plant life

The reserve is comprised of vegetation types including pockets of podocarp-broadleaf forest, kanuka forest, secondary scrub and gorse shrublands. About a quarter is mown grassland.

A stream at the bottom of the gully is a tributary of Mangemangeroa Creek.

Wild life

Long-tailed bats (Chalinolobus tuberculatus) have been observed in the reserve.

They are New Zealand’s smallest bat weighing 8-11grams, with a wingspan of about 25cms and have a homing range of 100 square kilometres.

Walks

A number of tracks allow access to parts of the reserve. A large part of this track system is through native bush.

Parts of the tracks are steep with many steps but both the trig and the highest point on the reserve are within a short walking distance of the car park.
